The challenge launched by the School of Engineering at the University of Deusto thirty years ago now to compete in a rowing boat race in Bilbao’s river, led to an event that has become one of the most long-standing sports events in Bilbao throughout the years: The Engineers-Deusto Boat Race. The fact that the winner does not receive a prize shows the amateur nature of this event. Each year, winners just have their name engraved on a tray and keep this trophy in their showcases until the following year, when they will compete to win it again. The Boat Race is run along a distance of four nautical miles (7,408 metres) on the Nervión river (Bilbao’s Estuary) between Desierto-Erandio and Bilbao’s Town Hall.
The overall results work in Deusto’s favour, since it has won 24 times against the 14 victories of the Engineers’ team. If you want to take part in the race this year, contact the Sports Department.
